Trefadder is Norway's leading player in biological carbon capture through safe CO2 capture from Norwegian climate forests. The company has developed a robust and recognized framework that ensures certified CO2 removal and storage, and that issues climate credits to companies.
Trefadder has already produced over 125.000 tons of climate credits for almost 200 customers, both in Norway and internationally.
Trefadder AS is based in Haugesund, and is owned by employees and "green" investors from all over the country.
History
Trefadder AS was started by entrepreneur Anders Kristiansen who wanted to create jobs in the rural areas and at the same time increase the pace of the green shift.
Norwegian business is far ahead in the green shift, but unfortunately there are significant residual emissions that cannot be reduced today for economic and technological reasons.
The company Trefadder was established in 2019 to help businesses reduce emissions, set up climate accounts and offer climate compensation from their own biological carbon capture production. In a short time, Trefadder has already become Norway's largest player in biological carbon capture.

Establishment and launch towards the business community
Trefadder AS was launched during Enterprise Day, with then-Minister of Finance Siv Jensen present.
Cooperation with agriculture
Trefadder AS creates local jobs and collaborates with farmers to establish climate forests. Trefadder AS was launched towards agriculture, with the then Minister of Food and Agriculture Olaug Bollestad in attendance.
Winner of the ITSA Growt program
Succeeding with a startup often requires significant capital and investors who believe in the company. Trefadder achieved solid recognition by winning the ITSA Growth final, which secured significant funding from several well-known investors.

Winner of the Fauna program
Trefadder came through the eye of the needle of the renowned Fauna program led by Tore and Siv Gjeddebo. After six months of coaching and sparring, Trefadder went all the way to the top and won 1 million NOK.
Scaled-up production
Together with our investors Innovation Norway and DNB, Trefadder invested in a massive production increase to remove even more CO2 from the atmosphere. During 2023, production was almost doubled.
Commercial breakthrough
Trefadder helps businesses with climate compensation and delivers annual CO2 removal equivalent to 100 tons.
This represents a significant commercial breakthrough that elevates our production to a high international level.
Our vision
Tree Sponsors shall be a driving force in the solution to the greatest environmental challenges of our time.
By developing forest projects that remove significant amounts of CO2 from the atmosphere, we are creating a sustainable future for future generations, while also ensuring the preservation and restoration of biodiversity.
Climate forest in Norway
Trefadder AS's commercial climate forests originate from a comprehensive state climate forest project under the auspices of the Ministry of Climate and Environment (2013-2019).
The Norwegian Environment Agency and Norway's leading forestry communities have spent more than 50 million kroner on Norwegian climate forest research in the period 2015-2021.
The climate effect of Norwegian climate forests is well documented and Trefadder, together with international partners, has further developed climate forest methodology, practice and documentation.
Project participants in the state climate forest project are listed on the right and more about the project can be read at https://www.miljodirektoratet.no/
Trefadder's concept is supported by research

The state climate forest research project was administered by the State Administrators of Rogaland, Trøndeland and Nordland.
The project documented, among other things:
- The carbon capture effect
- Environment and biodiversity impact
- Criteria for selecting areas
- Methodology and practice
The Norwegian Environment Agency has calculated that Norway can plant climate forests equivalent to a carbon capture of 447 million tonnes. Norway's annual emissions are approximately 49 million tonnes of CO2.
Norway therefore has good conditions for climate forests, especially along the western coast, which has vacant land and is less affected by the albedo effect.
Trefadder has built on this research and, together with KPMG Canada, has developed a commercial methodology for the production and documentation of climate forests. KPMG Canada has been a leading player in the certification and verification of climate forests in and outside Canada for several years.

Board
Investors
Trefadder has perhaps Norway's greenest business idea, and has attracted investors who want to help solve both the climate and nature crises. With our framework, we can now scale these solutions, which over time will capture and store millions of tons of CO2 directly from the atmosphere.
To realize this solid and unique concept, we have been fortunate to bring in strong investors from the start.
Trefadder creates a win-win for the environment, local landowners, customers and our owners.

Partners

KPMG Canada
Carbon capture framework
KPMG Canada has one of the world's leading professional communities within the verification of climate forest projects.
Trefadder and KPMG Canada have together developed the framework for carbon capture behind Norway's first commercial climate forest.

Bahr
Legal framework
The law firm BAHR is assisting Trefadder pro bono to develop a legal framework for the climate forest so that we secure the forest's rights for maximum CO2 capture during and after our lifetime.

Microsoft
ForestTech
Microsoft and Trefadder are developing a production platform for climate forests that will both identify the best areas and calculate carbon capture.

Aquaplan level
Professional expertise in old-growth forests
Trefadder has developed its climate forest strategy to also include the protection of old-growth forests - which is a very important climate measure and which safeguards red-listed biodiversity.
One of Norway's leading professional communities on old-growth forests can be found at Akvaplan-niva, which assists Trefadder with advice on identification, control of areas, inspections and further development of the framework for the protection of old-growth forests.

Beyonder
Circular commodity model
The Beyonder battery factory in Stavanger is developing batteries that use sawdust as a replacement for cobalt and nickel.
Logs from Trefadder's climate forests are used as an input factor, which further leads to Trefadder also being the world's first circular climate forest.
