Why do we plant trees?

All Norwegian businesses and households produce carbon. The way our society is structured, almost every activity will be considered as the production of greenhouse gases. You may drive a car. Regardless of whether the car runs on petrol, diesel or electricity, it costs the environment. Many argue that electricity in Norway is green, because we rely on hydropower and not coal and nuclear power. But we sell off large amounts of electricity to the rest of Europe during the summer months and buy electricity from the continent when the temperature drops below freezing and the hydropower plants cannot utilize the capacity in the reservoirs. In fact, Norway imports about as much electricity as we export.

All Norwegian businesses and households produce carbon. It costs energy, in the form of greenhouse gases, to perform almost any activity. Driving, flying, boating, electronics, food and heating cost energy in the form of greenhouse gases.

This carbon ends up in the air, soil or water and contributes to increasing global temperatures and acidifying the oceans. Trees are our best carbon store and also produce oxygen. In this way, more trees contribute to less carbon in circulation and more clean air. Each tree is of course a small drop in the ocean. But a drop is still a drop.
