Increased carbon sequestration and better forest management
Trefadder is committed to maximizing carbon sequestration in existing forests, and has therefore developed the concept "Temporary protection". This means that we protect the forest from being cut when it is economically mature, until it is biologically mature. This increases both CO₂ capture and storage, while providing more timber material for the buildings of the future – materials that can retain carbon sequestration for hundreds of years.
One of Norway's oldest carbon stores is the Vindusloftet barn in Telemark, which has preserved carbon for 750 years. By postponing the harvesting of forests with good timber quality and still high carbon absorption capacity, we can both achieve increased climate benefit and contribute to bigger, stronger trees.
This provides several benefits: the trees grow larger, capture more CO₂, and nature has better conditions to develop naturally. Too often, forests are cut too early to shorten production cycles, while delayed harvesting provides a long-term gain for both the climate and biodiversity.
